When There Is No Perfect Choice — The Courage to Exercise Judgement Read more »

Originally published on Digoshen in August 2026, as part of the Beyond the Old Playbook podcast and reflection series. In a world shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, technological disruption and accelerating change, leaders often seek greater certainty before making decisions. Yet what if our need for certainty is itself part of what holds us back? This reflection explores how leaders can move beyond the search for predictable answers and develop the judgement, curiosity and courage needed to navigate complexity. Drawing on a conversation with Lidija Drobež in the Beyond the Old Playbook podcast series, it considers why uncertainty is not simply a problem to eliminate, but a condition we need to learn to work with. Reflections Leadership is often associated with providing answers, setting direction and creating confidence. Yet when established assumptions no longer hold, the pressure to appear certain can narrow our perspectives and prevent us from recognising emerging possibilities. Perhaps the more important leadership capability is not knowing what comes next, but remaining open, thoughtful and purposeful when the future is unclear. This calls for humility, reflection and the willingness to question our own assumptions. Rather than waiting for complete information, we need to develop the capacity to act, learn and adapt as circumstances unfold. The Message The challenge of leadership is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to develop the courage and judgement to move forward within it. When we loosen our attachment to certainty, we create space for new perspectives, better questions and possibilities that established playbooks may never reveal.
