Leading into the Fog — What Will Leadership and Governance Require by 2030?

Originally published on Digoshen in 2026, as a concluding reflection on the Beyond the Old Playbook podcast and essay series.

As we look towards 2030, AI, geopolitical uncertainty, sustainability and societal change are reshaping the demands on leaders and boards.

Drawing on nine Beyond the Old Playbook conversations, this reflection explores six shifts in leadership and governance, from seeking certainty to exercising judgement, and from protecting existing value to enabling renewal and resilience.

Reflections

The future will require more than established expertise and traditional oversight. Leaders and boards must question assumptions, embrace different perspectives and strengthen their ability to learn and adapt.

Rather than trying to predict every development, the challenge is to build the collective capabilities to navigate uncertainty while remaining purposeful and responsible.

The Message

Leadership towards 2030 will depend less on predicting the future and more on our ability to sense change, exercise judgement and adapt together.

The question is not whether uncertainty will continue, but how prepared we are to lead within it.

What capabilities should leaders and boards strengthen today to navigate the uncertainties of 2030?
