What If What Made Us Successful Is Now Holding Us Back?

What If What Made Us Successful Is Now Holding Us Back?

Success is often built on experience, established capabilities and ways of thinking that have served us well over time. Yet in a world of accelerating technological, economic and societal change, the very strengths that once enabled success may become obstacles to renewal.

This reflection explores why leaders, boards and organisations sometimes struggle to adapt even when they recognise that the world around them is changing. As part of the Beyond the Old Playbook series, it considers how established assumptions, professional identities and proven business models can limit our ability to recognise new possibilities, and why meaningful transformation may require questioning what we have learned to value most.

Reflections

Experience and expertise are among our greatest assets. They help us recognise patterns, make decisions and navigate complexity. Yet they can also create blind spots when we assume that what worked in the past will continue to work in the future.

For organisations, this challenge often appears as a tension between protecting established sources of value and investing in opportunities that may challenge the existing business. For leaders and board members, it can be more personal. Our confidence, identity and credibility may be closely connected to the knowledge and approaches that have brought us success.

Letting go of familiar assumptions does not mean dismissing experience. Rather, it requires recognising when our experience needs to be reinterpreted, complemented or challenged.

This is particularly relevant as AI reshapes industries, work and decision-making. The question is not simply how to use new technologies within established structures, but whether those structures, and the assumptions behind them, remain appropriate.

Perhaps renewal begins when we become willing to question not only what is failing, but also what has worked exceptionally well.

The Message

What made us successful yesterday may not be what enables us to thrive tomorrow.

For leaders and boards, the challenge is to recognise when established strengths are becoming constraints and to develop the curiosity, humility and courage to rethink familiar approaches.

Renewal does not require abandoning everything we have learned. It requires knowing what to preserve, what to adapt and what we may need to leave behind to create space for what comes next.

Which of your most trusted strengths, assumptions or ways of working might now be limiting your ability to see and embrace new possibilities?
