Artwork reflection – the wellbeing benefits

There are many ways in which art nurtures wellbeing. Whether we look at it or create it, we find that being surrounded by art sharpens our concentration and makes us more expressive, more unique.

There are many ways art can help us in life, from problem-solving to finding meaning. But one of the most important ways is to relax, enjoy, be interested and feel connected to one another.

The benefits of watching and learning about art includes

  • In the midst of a hectic day, this is a great way to take a breather
  • Brings us into the present moment
  • Enhances our ability to focus
  • Imagination and mind are gently stimulated
  • Brings our feelings to our attention
  • A guided experience facilitates the journey
  • Learning about art and the roots of its creation

Research suggests that looking at beautiful art can reduce blood pressure and heart rate, as well as help with pain management. Art can reduce stress, balance hormones, and boost our mood by triggering something called the Relaxation Response.

It can also be energizing to step away from our inner chatter for a few minutes and just be aware of the moment as it is. By intentionally paying attention to the present, we can be more mentally and physically healthy, connecting to life in a rich and vital way. It has been shown that people who practice this live longer, feel happier and are more successful.

Being more observant of the world around us awakens our senses, grounds us, and helps us to de-stress because it de-clutters our heads to focus on one thing at a time.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to one’s present moment experience with a sense of curiosity, openness, and acceptance. The guided experience in reflecting at art has many similarities to mindfulness – we’re able to explore our internal and external worlds as well as how these may be inextricably intertwined. It is an alternative approach to apply mindfulness in day-to-day life.

Mindfulness has roots in multiple religions, including Buddhism. The important thing is that it’s a secular activity or way of living your life. Mindfulness can help us to pay attention to our whole lives- no matter what they might be like.
